Nature Lakes
(Contractor's License D35-#791561) was founded in 1993 by David Cowling, an Environmental
Management Specialist.
David's background includes over 20 years of maintaining pumps and associated mechanical systems
as well as, extensive hands-on experience maintaining natural aquatic eco-systems.
The goal of Nature Lakes is to improve the quality of your life in
the city by maintaining man-made water features without the use of ANY chemicals.

Chemicals (copper sulfate and chlorine) are liberally used by most lake maintenance
companies to kill algae at a great cost to the environment. They are
dumped into water features in an on-going, futile attempt to kill algae;
but in fact, they create even more pollution. Recent studies by the
EPA show chlorine is an acutely toxic chemical which can lead to the
formation of toxins, like chloroform and furans, as well as dioxins.
Dioxin exposure is linked to cancer.
The creation of chlorine damages thousands of acres of coastal marsh
used in evaporating salt, which is a major component. As well, many
toxic by-products are created during the manufacturing process.
Copper is a heavy metal which accumulates in the sediment and remains
forever toxic. Draining and cleaning water features with very low levels
of copper in the water or the soil requires a very costly permitting
process through the regional water quality control board. In some instances,
the copper levels are high enough so that no discharge is permitted.
The mining of copper has created America's largest Superfund clean-up site
located at Copper Mountain in Northern California. Many other open pit mines
in America are irreversibly damaging the environment while bringing copper
sulfate to your door.
When the chemicals kill the algae, the nutrients are never removed from
this system. The algae decomposes and releases stored nutrients back into
the water column. As soon as conditions are suitable for growth (i.e., the
concentration of chemicals is low), the algae returns with a slight resistance
to the chemicals which killed it initially. Over time, this resistance
will necessitate applying larger amounts of chemicals to obtain the
same results.
Algae is an aquatic plant that needs nutrients to survive. Instead
of using chemicals, we apply a method termed "habitat modification"
wherein a variety of higher aquatic plants, micro-organisms and
animal species are manipulated in such a way as to consume the very
nutrients needed by the algae to live. With its food source gone,
algae starves. The result is crystal clear water, naturally!
